Celebrating end of year, Ellie takes her friends on a trip to a remote destination called 'Hell'. They return home to find their parents are missing, the phone network down and homes ransacked.

War has begun. In the aftermath of Ellie's petrol bomb, the invading army swarms through the streets of Wirrawee. Lee is shot in the leg & Robyn is forced to carry him to the momentary safety of his house.
